Feb 10/04, the Minister of National Defence, the Honourable David Pratt, accompanied by General Ray Henault, Chief of the Defence Staff, and Chris Alexander, Canadian Ambassador to Afghanistan, view a monument dedicated to the memory of Canadian soldiers killed in the pursuit of peace in Afghanistan. The monument was erected at Camp Julien after two soldiers were killed when the Iltis in which they were travelling struck a landmine on 2 Oct 2003. The monument also includes the names of 4 members of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry who were killed in Afghanistan in 2002.

Nov 21, 2003, The Honourable John McCallum, Minister of National Defence was visiting the Canadian Forces deployed in Afghanistan to speak with Canadian soldiers and local officials.

He is seen here paying his respects to the soldiers who were killed while serving in Afghanistan during Operations Apollo and Athena.


Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada and Commander in Chief of the Canadian Forces, and His Excellency John Ralston Saul with Canadian Ambassador to Afghanistan Christopher Alexander, take a moment to view a monument dedicated to Canadian Soldiers killed while serving in Afghanistan, at Camp Julien in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Op ATHENA is Canada's contribution to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the United Nations-authorized mission in Kabul, Afghanistan. Operation ATHENA began in August 2003 and is currently scheduled to end late summer 2004. The mission of ISAF is to maintain security in Kabul and its surrounding areas so the Afghan Transitional Authority and UN agencies can begin rebuilding the country. At this time, ISAF comprises 5,500 troops from 31 different nations.

LCol Don Denne (Left) and CWO Dan Bradley, Commanding Officer and Regimental Sergeant Major of the Third Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment Battalion Group unveil a plaque in memory of Cpl Jamie Murphy who was killed in Kabul by a suicide bomber on 27 Jan 2004.

The plaque will be added to a monument at Camp Julien dedicated to all Canadian soldiers who gave their life in the service of peace in Afghanistan.


Feb 5/04, Major John Vass, Officer Commanding Parachute Company, of the Third Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment Battalion Group (3 RCR Bn Gp) speaks on behalf of Parachute Company at the Official Opening of the Noor Burn Clinic in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The Clinic, partially funded by the Canadian International Development Agency, was dedicated to the memory of Cpl Robbie Beerenfenger, a member of Parachute Company, 3 RCR Bn Gp, who was killed when the Iltis in which he was travelling struck a landmine on 2 Oct 03. This the only pediatrics burn clinic in Afghanistan.

The commemorative tablet located above the door was our contribution to the project. It was produced by Laser Etch Technologies in Calgary.
